Located at Gowdavally village, near Medchal Mandal of Ranga Reddy
District in Andhra Pradesh, KRUSHI is a home for children, who are
housed, educated and integrated with the main stream of the society (At
Krushi, usage of the term "Street Children" is consciously avoided).
Every effort is made to counsel and restore the children to their
parents/relatives. Those children who cannot be restored to their
parents / relatives, for various reasons, are retained in Krushi Home
and educated, with the ultimate objective of making them self sufficient
and responsible citizens. The effort has been fairly successful with
almost all the boys in schools / colleges or undergoing vocational
training etc.
"The new Krushi Home is located in a 2.3acre piece of
land. The building can accommodate around 125 children. Adequate
provision has been made for dormitories, study halls, dining/kitchen
facilities, adequate open space for play and recreation and also guest
rooms. Since the Home is located in a rural area, it is also proposed to
have a vocational centre to train the rural youth in useful trades like
welding, carpentry and also to impart basic computer skills to them. A
separate training centre is proposed to build for this purpose adjacent
to the main building." |

Support to Govt. Schools: |
|
|
|
|
In
the year 1997, Project Krushi started seven schools in Hyderabad slums,
in association with Balajyothi, a Central Government Programme, working
for eradication of child labour. Besides providing basic education to
children in the slums, who otherwise had no access to schools, Project
Krushi concentrated on the all round development of the children. The
success story of these schools is evident from the fact that the State
Government has taken over these schools in the year 2001.
Exposure to the Krushi-Balajyothi Schools, has given
Project Krushi an insight into the shortcomings in the Government
Schools and it was felt that support to the Government schools would
help in taking quality education to a large number of children living in
urban slums. Towards this end, support to six Government Primary schools
was extended in the year 2002-03, by providing them with teaching /
learning material, arranging for better accommodation, providing para
teachers, ayahs etc., based on the need of each school. From June, 2003
Project Krushi adopted 24 Govt. Schools in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy
Districts. The following activities have been carried out in these
schools and the support is being continued.
1. Constructed new school buildings and additional
classrooms.
2. Para-teachers
were appointed and supported by Krushi since there was a
great shortage of Government teachers.
3. Every school has been provided with an Ayah to clean up the
premises on a day to day basis.
4. Capital items like steel storage cabinets, tables, chairs, steel
water drums to store drinking water etc., were given where required.
5. Teaching/ learning Material was given to all the schools to make
class-room learning interesting
6. Training programs were conducted for teachers at regular
intervals with professional guidance
7. Celebrated school annual days to bring out the talent in
children
8. Conducted science exhibitions, competitions etc,
9. Organized outings/educational tours for older children
10. Provided 430 dual desks |

Co-Managing the Govt. Homes under Juvenile Justice Act. |
|
|
|
|
Project Krushi
was actively involved in the drafting of the Rules under the Juvenile
Justice Act and these were adopted, in toto, by the Government of Andhra
Pradesh. The Government of Andhra Pradesh has appointed krushi as
Nodal Agency
for the Government Observation Home for Boys
Since January, 2005 Krushi has confined its activities mainly to the
Observation Home for Boys. Project Krushi's efforts have seen a drastic
reduction in the number of inmates at the Observation Home, with the
Judiciary also taking a keen interest in speeding up the judicial
process. Interaction with the police has helped in children not being
arrested for offences, which they are made to commit, by organized
gangs, especially as couriers for bootleggers. Targeting the bootleggers
rather than the couriers seems to be yielding results, with very few
children being sent to the Observation Home under this offence now,
compared to a majority of the children being sent under this offence to
this Home, in the past. Unless the children in the Observation Home are
given proper counseling and emotional support, there is every chance
that these children will continue to lead a life of crime |

Working in the slums has made Project Krushi realise the
importance of education, vocational training, medical help and
counseling, to the residents. With these in view, the concept of
"Community Centres" has been developed and implemented in slums
The concept of "Community Centres" was first introduced in the B. K.
Guda slum in March 2002. This is one of the largest slums in the Twin
Cities, located in an inaccessible area, sandwiched between the
Hyderabad Airport and the Railway Line. With financial support from
Friends Indeed, the centre provides vocational training - presently in
the field of embroidery, crochet/tatting and tailoring for girls to
supplement their family income. Five batches of girls, comprising 90
girls have been successfully trained |
